What is IEMT? How can IEMT help you overcome trauma?

First of all, let me point out this is not trance work. I’m a qualified hypnotherapist but this therapy is non-hypnotic and allows change to happen.

IEMT – Integral Eye Movement Therapy is effective change work – that works swiftly to de-charge negative memories, reduce negative emotions, post traumatic stress and work on disempowered ideas around identity. IEMT essentially works as the client holds the problem and its imagery in mind whilst being led to move the eyes in different directions – (along the axes of how we process information). This  brief and simple method can lead to rapid release and relief. IEMT tends to work very well for trauma, phobias, anxiety, depression and feeling over-reactive. IEMT often succeeds in bringing positive change where traditional therapy has not worked.

Feeling both more calm and more empowered after sessions, my clients have been surprised at how effective IEMT has been for clearing the grip past trauma has had over their lives. We’ve also worked successfully on lessening anxiety over both current and anticipated situations, tricky relationships, and feeling more able to step out of victimhood, to focus on creating more of what they want in their lives. Change using IEMT on adults and children who have been; victims of sexual abuse, domestic abuse, attacks and victims of terrorist attacks has been especially beneficial.

IEMT has been widely used in the military to alleviate suffering of post traumatic stress – I don’t like using the word ‘disorder’ as it is natural that having witnessed or experienced traumatic incidences would cause upset! IEMT sessions are offered through UK based charity – Save Our Soldier. Please note IEMT is change work not ongoing counselling support.

IEMT can also help to identify and then work on the common patterns behind why people may have been stuck in their problems (using the 5 patterns of chronicity). It is perfect for sensitive issues as there is no requirement to disclose content (any specific uncomfortable details) unlike in some other methods. IEMT is a straightforward process and the notable difference in the negative feelings created by problems are first quantified and labelled by the client as personal to them as then the results re-calibrated after applying IEMT.

IEMT addresses and resolves the question: “How did this person learn to feel this way about this thing?” then working on the early memories that are causing the patterns of emotional responses that may be preventing a person from living fully. By dealing with an imprint often from childhood, freedom can occur from a pattern of negative echoes throughout one’s life that have been because X has meant Y emotionally and if A happens B will always follow. It can be very liberating. Working with root causes is the best way  to say goodbye to disempowerment then using affirmations and taking new actions can create new positive behaviours to live happier.

Testimonial: I went to Jon with a few things that I was struggling with. Loss of my Nanny and Grandad. The Trauma of my special needs sons first operation when he was 18 months old where we nearly lost him and the anger I felt towards my Dad who left my mum. My triggers were Christmas time when I would feel the pain of not having Nanny and Grandad. With my son it was when he was struggling or having a meltdown or when he had to go for another operation I would get flashbacks to that first operation and wonder if it was my fault. Origins of IEMT: The technique stemmed from the observation of a number of neurological phenomena that occur during the eye movements at the point that the problematic imagery changed its emotional coding. Andrew T. Austin developed a method of a specific set of applications of this phenomenon – ‘Integral Eye Movement Technique’ (IEMT) and found he could address areas that EMDR hadn’t been effective on -EMDR was created back in the 1980s. Andrew T. Austin continued to develop the use of IEMT on neurological imprints – specifically, emotional imprints and imprints of identity. He is dedicated to evolving this work and maintaining high standards in the training of IEMT, which has facilitated welcome change and ease for people to overcome anxiety, depression, phobias and more all across the world.

What you can expect during a consultation

Whether working with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or a different energy psychology modality I begin consultations with a discussion and exploration of the issue(s) at hand and how you could expect to work and resolve these issues using these techniques. During this first consultation you can definitely expect to experience EFT, its possibilities and effects. Clients always leave feeling that they have gained greater clarity of their situation and have made some (quite often significant) shift. A large dose of HOPE, relief and curiosity are regularly experienced during the first session. The speed at which I can arrive at “core issues”, or the roots of the problem is perhaps one of the most amazing attributes of these techniques, as is the ease and painlessness of their clearing. Clients often comment how quickly we get to explore the roots of problem versus traditional forms of psychotherapy.

During the first consultation, you will get some indication of the number of sessions needed, (In most case  only 1 or 2 sessions are needed) although this can change as I progress and is something we will discuss as needed. Whilst some problems can dissipate quickly, others are often more complex and present numerous different “aspects” to be worked through. I take a person-centred approach and work at the appropriate pace – the general idea is to create change and transformation easily and quickly. Clients are also encouraged to use the techniques on their own between visits. This can both accelerate the process and empower the person to manage their own lives effectively, especially in times of need.
